As a researcher within the Faculty of Business you would be supported on a day-to-day basis by a supervisory team of academic staff members, headed by a Director of Studies. The first task of this team would be to help you prepare your registration, which normally takes place after an initial probationary period of six months. Registration is generally for the MPhil degree in the first instance, and this is converted to PhD registration after sufficient progress has been made.
You need to think long and hard before doing a research degree. Most people find the change from a taught course to self-directed study to be very hard. It can be frustrating and demoralising to spend three or four years trying to produce evidence that you are a clever and original thinker! And at the end, although being able to call yourself 'Dr' is very nice, it may not qualify you directly for anything except academic work or employment in a research laboratory/department.
Of course, doing a research degree does indirectly qualify you for many things. The self-discipline, the demand for clear, analytical thinking, the ability to turn criticism of others' work into something constructive of your own, these all constitute a unique training for almost any kind of career you might subsequently choose. And the excitement and satisfaction of finding new facts, or a new idea, or a new way of looking at something, can reward you in a way almost no other activity can. If you are looking for this kind of excitement then we are probably looking for you!
