The Faculty of Business has a large network of collaborations with partners in many parts of the world. Most collaborations are for the joint delivery of postgraduate programmes particularly in the business and management area.
Early in 2008 discussions were held in the Faculty for activities to (a) support the quality of our PG provision particularly in relation to those courses that are taught jointly with international institutions; and (b) support the research underpinning to such courses.
The discussions led to a plan for a conference to be held at LSBU with the participation of researchers from all partner institutions. The conference aims were to:
The two days of the programme were planned around subject-based research and pedagogic works. The response to our call was enthusiastic and, in fact, not all the submitted papers could be accepted. This was largely due to the fact that we wanted to keep all presentations and discussions plenary to give maximum scope for interaction between colleagues.
On the days, things did not quite go as planned. Monday and Tuesday 2nd and 3d of February saw the worst snow storm in twenty years. Most colleagues from partner institutions managed to arrive at LSBU as they were hosted in hotels not far away. However, not all LSBU colleagues were able to attend because of severe transport difficulties. As many papers as possible were presented on day one but on Tuesday the university remained closed as did many other public buildings.
In spite of this unforeseen problem the organization of the conference was a success. Papers were presented and contacts on research started.
We, as the main organizers of the conference now want to make the papers and/or presentation slides available on line to give an opportunity for comments and exchanges on research issues.
