Pre-Study English Course

Our Pre-Study English course is for International students whose first language is not English (undergraduate and postgraduate) joining LSBU courses beginning in September. The course runs before this, from August to September, with class time between 9am and 4pm every day. There are 25 hours of timetabled activities per week, with class teaching for approximately 20 hours per week plus time for other activities.

Course Aims

  • Preparation for studying at LSBU in general and on specific courses
  • Practice in and strategies for continuing to improve academic and general language skills
  • Becoming an independent learner
  • Living in London.

Course Outline

  • Academic language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening including listening to lectures, team and project work
  • Language improvement: general English, including some review of vocabulary and grammar
  • Studying at LSBU - generally; on your particular course
  • Review of information technology: what LSBU offers
  • How to continue improving your language skills and becoming an independent learner
  • Living in London and the UK: topic-based, including information and advice
  • Weekly tutorial: meet your personal tutor once a week to discuss progress.

You will be also helped with aspects of living here, for example opening a bank account, police registration, registering with a doctor, travelling around London etc.

Social Programme and Welfare

There will be some social events at the beginning and end of the course and organized visits to places of interest in central London during the course, for example the London Eye. The course team includes teachers, student mentors and social programme coordinators who all work together to help you adapt to studying and living here. We are here to help you!

Assessment: Passing the course - the leaving certificate

There will be some tasks to be done in class and out of class for which you will be given marks. You will get a certificate of attendance at the end of the course with a comment on your performance and progress on the course indicating your readiness for academic study.

To get the leaving certificate you must have:

  • Attended 80% of the classes and participated actively
  • Completed at least 80% of the assessed tasks satisfactorily.

Groups

You will work in groups of around 12 students, maximum 16 per group.

The English Language Section

The English Language Section in the Faculty of Business offers a range of courses in general and specific academic language skills: EAP and ESP. You will be taught by qualified and experienced staff who enjoy making international students feel welcome in the multicultural environment of London South Bank University.

You will benefit from our substantial English language teaching resources as well as the use of university facilities: a multimedia Language Centre, the Perry Library, the Learning Resource Centre and the Sports Centre.

Accommodation

You may be able to live in the University Halls of Residence (subject to availability) which are all five to ten minutes’ walk from the university buildings.

You would have a single study bedroom (some with en-suite showers) in a flat on a self-catering basis and provide your own bed linen and kitchen equipment. The university cafeteria is open for all meals if required.

Admissions/Entry Requirements

Your level of English on admission must be equal or equivalent to IELTS level 6.0, TOEFL 550 (computerised: 213, Internet-based: 80).
